Pre-Prep

The Pre-Prep is where boys build the foundation for their futures and is the stage in their school careers where most boys will learn to read. At St John’s we make their introduction to more formal learning enjoyable and stimulating. Good manners, independence and high standards of behaviour are reinforced.

“The Pre-Prep Department has fostered a passion for learning in our boys whilst maintaining a nurturing and supportive environment. Overall, a perfect introduction to school life.”

The Pre-Prep offers bright and attractive classrooms and abundant play areas in a modern, secure, purpose-built development allowing the boys room for growth and discovery both indoors and out. We take full advantage of extensive grounds, especially the forest area which contains the tree house, nature trail and forest trail where the boys explore the natural environment, develop their physical skills and gain knowledge through independent learning.

A variety of after school clubs are available for boys from Year 1, there are regular educational outings, and a residential trip in Year 2. Teaching is cross-curricular and topic-based and emphasis is placed on Reading, Writing and Mathematics. All boys are taught by specialist teachers for Music, International Studies and P.E. They have their first experiences of public speaking through Christmas plays, poetry competitions and class assemblies. Through the curriculum, we aim to ensure that every boy reaches his full potential and feels happy, safe and secure.

Central to the boys’ school lives is their class teacher who is ably assisted by a teaching assistant. Class teachers also build a relationship with parents and are always available to meet informally at the end of the school day. The Head of Lower School, Miss Morgan, is also available at the beginning and end of most days. Parent consultation meetings take place three times a year and a written report is produced at the end of each term.

Daily life in the Pre-Prep

The Pre-Prep day starts at 8.25 a.m. with registration at 8.40 a.m. Morning lessons are divided by a break at 10.25 a.m. when the boys have a drink and a snack. They play outside in a dedicated Pre-Prep playground complete with climbing equipment.

Lessons resume at 10.45 a.m. and carry on until 12.00 p.m. when the boys are given a nutritious lunch in the dining room. There are regular assemblies at 12.30pm or an interactive ‘Circle Time’ which allows the class teacher a different way of reinforcing values and behaviour.

At 12.45 p.m. the boys have the opportunity play in one of the many outdoor areas. At 1.30 p.m. the afternoon sessions commence and the boys go home between 3.00 p.m. and 3.10 p.m. There is a Late Room facility for boys who have brothers in the Prep School which runs until 4.00 p.m., as well as after-school clubs for Years 1 and 2 on Tuesdays to Thursdays. There is also the option of breakfast and after-school care if required.
